Sculpting the Northern White Rhino
A collaboration between Zura and Mahala Gaylord
At Twelve Chairs Gallery, we believe art can serve as a bridge between beauty and responsibility — a medium that not only reflects the world, but protects it.
This short film captures sculptor Zura in the creation of a powerful tribute: a sculpture of the Northern White Rhino, one of the planet’s most critically endangered species. With only two known females remaining, the species' survival now depends on extraordinary scientific efforts, including those led by BioRescue and other pioneering organizations using stem cell research to bring them back from the brink.
Filmed and edited by Mahala Gaylord, the piece offers a quiet yet urgent meditation on fragility, extinction, and the power of creation.
We are honored to share this work as part of our ongoing commitment to wildlife awareness and invite collaboration with conservationists, researchers, and organizations at the intersection of science and art.
"We cannot recreate what we lose — but through art, we can help preserve what still remains."
